The basics to make your MUGEN better (at least for me) are to essential:
1) Download a re-skin of the game such as Mugen mega mix HD
2) Download a huge roster of balanced and bug free characters
3) Download a large amount of stages

In that order. I recommend being consistent in the type of characters you download and type of stages so that you can get an amazing experience in both the short and long run.
