Life would be boring if everything was sunshine and flowers. I can't even call myself a optimist, not even a pessimist, like, i know there are positive things in few situations, but i also know that there are some situations where one just can't think about anything positive. You can't just tell a depressed/empty person to cheer up, or think positive. I know i will sound ironic and hypocritical, but sometimes, focusing on a negative thing is positive as well, you are looking at your problems and thinking of solutions. Some people who have had a bad life let that out in a positive or a negative way. Positive way would be, they treat everyone well and kind, because they know what is it like to feel hopeless and they don't want others to feel that way.
Negative way would be, they bully others and are often rude. Not every bully had a bad life though, there are some people who had good lives, but still bully others just to feel good for themselves.
"Someone has it worse" saying means nothing. Negativity and bad feelings shouldn't be a competition. You don't hear people saying "Someone has it better" when someone is feeling good so, "Someone has it worse" just makes things worse. You are not selfish for feeling bad, it's just life. We can help people without putting them down and saying hurtful things, because there are some people who take everything to heart and can be emotionally weak.
I see letting out negative feelings as a really positive thing as well. When you feel bad, you just want to let these feelings out. It's normal. But at the same time, it depends on how someone lets it out. I am against people punching or beating up someone just because they are angry, they can let their anger out on social media (as stupid as that sounds, but it can be helpful for few people because rants are something cool) or a punching bag or a video game. That is positive, let your negative feelings without using violence.
And one more thing, negative things in fiction actually make the fiction more interesting, serious and easier to relate to and easier to like. I can enjoy few jokes, but we should also be serious in few situations. If some fictional game/show/book/etc was all sunshine and flowers and happiness, then i wouldn't be interested because that sounds bland as hell, but i guess execution is more important than the idea itself, there are few things that have bad ideas but the execution is well, and some things have awesome ideas, but the way they are executed makes people dislike them.

This may sound popular, but not where i live, my so-called "optimist/positive" father (he calls himself positive/optimist, ) is constantly negative and always finds something to complain about and insults my family members (counting me, but i hate the way he treats his wife, it's as if he hates her, he can be merciful to other members, but he is at his worst when talking to his wife) most of times and tries to find other rude words to add to his dictionary so, it is a sign that some people who call themselves optimist/positive turn out to be rude.
And i know that i have one sister (married, doesn't live with me) that is constantly negative and always talks about deaths of some people or other bad events, depends. It's ok to be negative and positive few times, because balance is always the best. People that are too positive turn out to be annoying and unrealistic, people that are too negative are annoying as well and kill the happiness of fun and enjoyable conversations, people who are in between are decent.
