Yeah.. I have this issue where I will like games if they have a rhythm kind of aspect to it. From Intro music to setting a scene depending on gameare really important in my eyes. Fighting stages especially since I love to kick *** with a beat behind it. Though if you watch the competitive scene, they don't listen much to the stage music, but their own music or the crowd lol.

Capcom was the first company to really make me sit up and take notice when it cae to fighting game music; Street Fighter II's themes are so iconic by now they're as instantly associable with the fighting game genre as Mario is to platformers, or the classic Zelda or Final Fantasy themes to RPGs.

For my personal tastes, though, the soundtracks from the first two Battle Arena Toshinden games had some really great, catchy, unique songs. This was also back in the early, early PS1 era, when video games could be played as music CDs with their own soundtrack. I dug that. Still do. Of particualr note to me are Sofia and Mondo's themes from BAT1, and Gaia and Sho's from BAT2. Sho in particular took Bach's Toccata and Fugue and segued it into something utterly epic (and utterly 90s) and I loved it.

From more recent games, I have to admit, outside of MvC3's nifty unique character themes (Magneto and Deadpool are the obvious ones, but I also like the themes used for Chris Redfield, Trish, and Amaterasu), nothing really comes to mind.

Tangentially related note: I really want Yuki Kajiura to compose the soundtrack for a fighting game you guys. It'd be so epic <3

The better part of music in fighting games is when it reaches a climax like some "JUST DO IT!" for you to win and all
Some nice musics around Fighting Games:
    Blazblue:
    SIX-HEROES
    Reincarnation
    The Tyrant
    Awakening the Chaos
    MUST DIE
    Black Onslaught II

    Guilty Gear:
    Still in the Dark
    Momentary Life
    Awe of She
    Magnolia Eclair
    Tsuki no Shihai
    Bao Babel Nose
    Diva

    KOF:
    Any Geese theme
    butterfly emerges from chrysalis
    Rythmic Allucination
    Cutting Edge
    Save the Universe
    Undercover

    And the list goes on

I've always liked the tracks from the Tekken games. Specially T3 and T5 (Moonlit Wilderness, Unforgiven and Dragon's Nest baby). T2 got some nostalgia tracks as well like Kazuyas stage theme. And the classic SF2 tracks as well.

What would a fighting game be like with no music maybe just random noise and ambient sounds but if I had to say what games that I liked had the best music in my opinion
SF III:Third Strike and Guilty Gear XX I do like the Tekken 7 soundtrack as well

When it comes to setting a theme, several things are important, such as building tension and developing an idea set to a player.
One way of doing this is by music.
In fighting games, players know that, with the touch of their fingers, absolute victory or bitter defeat is always imminent.
Because of the design of fighting games, the tension is already set, and the music is meant to establish the idea to the player that they are likely about to get into some serious trouble.
(This is Especially seen during final boss encounters like when fighting characters like Akuma and Nightmare.)
Guile's theme is also a good example of this, as it's upbeat tone makes you stay on your toes, while also telling you that the upcoming battles won't get any easier.

SkullGirls, QoH '99, EFZ, SF & KOF series have the best music ever composed imo (QoH '99 & EFZ's music were arranged from some VN games).
When i was a kid i loved the Ao Iconoclast song (Blazblue ~Calamity Trigger~ OP) by KOTOKO, it's very unforgettable/memorable.
