MUGEN ERROR: Stage not Loading

i'm new to this MUGEN stuff so, i downloaded a MUGEN from a YouTuber already configured and filled with a lot of characters. Then i started to add charecters and stages i felt where missing from the pack. But whenever i try to play in a new stage i installed, the following message pops up:

i click "OK" and the MUGEN closes. What is the meaning of this?Please, help!

What version of mugen are you running? could be incompatible with the stage you're trying to play.

Indeed. That is the stage. I believe the Mugen´s version is the 1.1, with many other modifications, like the Tag system form the ADD004, and 2D stages that pretend to be 3D, very cool effect

I tested the same stage on my add004 build, and worked successfully. however i did get a similar error when I renamed the sff file or changed the sff's filename in the .def file. perhaps that could be the case?

i took a look into the sff file and the name of the stage was typed wrong in the [sprite] area, you were right!!!!The stage is working now, thank you very much for your help!

Thank you for this thread! I was having trouble getting some stages to work but my problem was with the location of the sff file too. I had to point the def to the proper location. Another thing I will add in case someone else is having stage issues is that i have noticed some of my def files have spaces in the file name when they extract. My mugen will not recognize them if there is a space and they are not available in the select screen until I remove the space from the file and then alter the file name in the def file etc...

Speaking of renaming files i will also add that mugen does not recognize unicode characters in filenames for some reason (ex. japanese/chinese characters), and some authors release their characters/stages like that, so you gotta first rename them to whatever you want and add that to the def file too. As to why they do that, i have no clue.

I'm having an error similar to this. Could anyone help? "cant open stage0-720" Thats like the default stage. I was able to play for a bit but now I get this error past the character selection.

You're using a Mugen version that this stage was not made for.

I didnt add a new stage and the game was working before. I was able to play it but it came up afterwards.

There are several causes of that issue and its just a case of troubleshooting via the elimination process:

1. Confirm the mugen version you are using (winmugen/1.0/1.1)\
2. Confirm the version of mugen the stage is made for (mugen 1.0 or lower with 8bit sprites that are indexed / 1.1 OpenGL with 16bit png sprites and zoom/new 1.1 coding features)
3. Confirm the stage .def and .sff name match.
4.Confirm the name typed inside the stage .def file also matches the .sff and .def file name
5.Confirm the stage is in the correct directory such as your stages folder (ie stages/stagename.def)
