For me it's Dan from the street fighter series. I know he was programmed to be the joke of the series but I feel bad for him and would love to see someone in a tournament to use him and win.

blame Toriyama/the people who told him to continue DBZ after it "ended", since the Cell saga was supposed to be the end and Goku was to stay dead. i would have loved to have seen more focus on Gohan but the people loved Goku :/

What did you expect? He's kinda the face of the whole series and the most recognizable character in the manga, video games, and anime.

I can't think of any other character that seems to be beloved by everybody else.

EDIT: Actually, make that James Sunderland of SH2. I would say Eddie Dombowski, but nobody likes him so he doesn't fit the question. His initial actions make me rather hate the man, despite (and also due to) him being a rather pleasant, if unusually muted, man.

I'd say any Sonic characters who aren't Sonic, Tails, Knuckles or Robotnik/Eggman. So many of them are just poor copies of those four in what they do or how they act that it really feels like Sonic Team is just flinging characters out there in the hopes they'll get popular enough to warrant a spinoff series like they did with Shadow (although we all know how that turned out).

Master Chief wasn't initially developed with a complex backstory in mind, even though the fans tout him as if he's Writers G uild material. He's always been a husk that the player controls throughout the game. I'm not one for perfect, unstoppable forces myself
