I can assure that this game isn't really that bad, there alternative versions of said characters he could've download. And depending on his MUGEN (Winmugen, 1.0, or 1.1), the issue might be compatibility.

I've literally just started playing this game two days ago. Although it was a bit difficult to get around your head what the controls actually meant (I couldn't do combos because I misunderstood what D and F meant and assumed you just press them) the game is actually quite addictive. That and you can add a huge number of characters. It's a cool game in my opinion.

Try Downloading VSelect.EXE, It allows you to Select which Executable & Motif you Want to Use. You can Also Drag & Drop Characters form the Chars folder to your Select Screen.

It is Also Included in the IMT RED/IMT BLUE M.U.G.E.N Folders you Can Download.

I assume you're trying to download MUGEN characters and you keep getting errors? Installing characters is as simple as 1, 2, 3. All you do is download, extract, pop a character in, add the folder's names to the Select.def and you're done. If that's too much for you, then take a gander at Vselect.

AND make sure the main folder of your character share the same name as the .def file. learn that the hard way

Yeah, there really is no excuse for not asking for help...of even searching YouTube for a guide...took me less than a minute to find a guide explaining everything.
