Default Announcement : screenpacks to be deleted

Many improper screenpacks will be deleted soon, they do impact the site performances dramatically.

Developers, optimize your screenpacks or upload them elsewhere :
    -Use ssfv2 compressed graphics
-Don't repack with characters, stages, binaries
-Release a proper add-on for official MUGEN builds
    -Don't include any unnecessary resource

Keep in mind server resources are not unlimited. Be more responsible.

    /* edit 20170622 */
This is an old and deprecated announcement, feel free to ignore it.

It might not be related but the server has crashed multiple times in the past hours.

The logs show some very unusual peaks with over a thousand guests simultaneously online. Possibly botnet attacks.

I have limited guests download to prevent any further crash.

We must stabilish a size limit.

I uploaded many screenpack that are 60mb, 80mb , and they are all been taking down.
I understand the ones that are bigger than 100mb, but there are tons of SP around 60-80 that are here for a long time.

Those ones are here since 2012

    And the list goes on...

Can someone plz explain it? Cuz it doesn't makes sense.
Specially the Tekken one (84mb) and the Marvel vs Capcom 3 one (62mb, jeez, it's not even that big. We have chars bigger than this)
Also, why is this one not a problem? http://mugenarchive.com/forums/downl...=file&id=23130 (108mb)

I think Left4Joker is right and we should at least agree on some informal limit, even if it's not added to the rules.
I'll look into the SP section to figure out what the limit should be (probably around 75-100M) in order to stick to it.
Larger screenpacks are likely suffering from a lack of optimization, and it wouldn't be reasonable to let these files downgrade general user experience by making the overall download speed very slow just because a bunch or spiders and robots are downloading the site content non stop.

Note that the screenpacks weren't actually deleted, just moderated and they can still be reinstated after we implement some measures to maintain a reasonable download speed for everyone. My opinion is unregistered users should have a file size cap, that would solve the issue gracefully.

Please yes, always keep your screenpacks as small as possible. They're supposed to be uploaded as proper addons to be extracted on top of a fresh MUGEN build. They aren't supposed to include any unnecessary resources (characters, stages, binaries, etc...). We're asking developers to act a bit more responsibly and consider server resources are never unlimited. Thank you.

The problem with this is that sometimes there's no mention to what version the screenpack is. Winmugen? Mugen 1.0? Mugen 1.1?
I believe the makers release them pre-patched so nobody has any confusion about this.
It's kinda hard to ask uploaders to find out, in those packs, what is necessary and what is not...

1 or 2 chars are sometimes a necessary evil too, specially with those screenpacks that require custom portraits. They are examples of how they should work. (X, Y axis, sprite number, etc)

The filesize cap is a great idea.
Maybe a daily download limit too? The higher your rank, higher is the download limit.
This could actually be implemented in the future with somekind of leveling system.
It would certainly increase the number of interactions, comments and posts, and decrease the number of inactive members.

Thanks OG, you're adorable as usual.

After browsing the screenpack list, my decision is all screenpacks larger than 80M are eligible to temporary moderation (not deletion!).

I'm also going to urge the webmaster to issue individual download filesize limit for unregistered users, which will allow us to reinstate all of these screenpacks without downgrading user experience.

So please moderators, feel free to unapprove any SP above 80M. Thank you.

So sad, but necessary, its annoying for users to download screenpacks which have a heavy impact in performance.

I'm a little noob in the matter of managing a storage page, if a good idea to remove repeated characters, KOF clones, MC DONALD clones and OROCHI clones, since they are extremely heavy

I think files with additional unnecessary files should be modified and those files should only be what they are supposed to be. There are screenpacks with additional files like storyboards or characters with stages and bgms which makes the files considerably larger.

This is a very old and deprecated announcement. We moved to much more powerful servers ever since, so none of the issues mentioned above are relevant anymore.
