    Default Making Palettes

I was looking at the tutorials for how to make a MUGEN character, but the tutorial says that Adobe Photoshop is needed to make the palettes into an ACT file.
Is there a way I can do this with a free program that doesn't require much work to install?
I'm on Windows 10 with MUGEN 1.1 if that helps.

You don't have to do it in Photoshop and in 1.1 I*heard,* it's automatically done. You can literally do it in paint. Just make the background color all black and be sure the character has no complete black (0,0,0) value on the sprites.

So I could make a png file and have that as a character palette? Or do I use a 256 color bitmap?

I always make the character palette a png personally when developing for 1.0. (again 1.1 apparently doesn't care, i'm not sure how that works cuz I haven't played with it yet). But 1.0 is more difficult to set it up for so I'll explain that one.

    1.0
Import the sprite sheet of your character to point out to Fighter Factory every single hue you're going to use to develop the character. Then, you import the individual character sprites and set the group/index numbers and all that. The reason why you want the background value to be 0,0,0 is because by default, fighter factory makes the "coldest" color the background color automatically, as soon as you import and establish the palette map. So making the bg color complete black prior to importing it to fighter factory means you don't have to worry about editing the positioning of the color swatches or anything in fighter factory. It's already set up. That's the way I do it anyway.

The more traditional way to do it is to take the existing background hue and switch it in the advanced palette mode and do a bunch of stuff. But I can't explain that because I don't know. I currently have two characters and I was able to figure out how to do it on the first one. But then I forgot how to do it and couldn't figure it out on the 2nd time. So I just said screw it and made the background on the sprite sheet 0,0,0 and re-imported everything. And it was way easier.

Do I make a sprite sheet or do I make a gif?
I'm really appreciating your help so far by the way. I just don't know how to do any of this since the tutorials seem a bit outdated.

    Thanks.

Gifs have nothing to do with it. You'll 100% need a spritesheet.
