I think that, despite having less features than other softwares, MS Paint can be good for sprite making.
Of course, it takes time and skill. You can also take sprites from other games to make it easier for you so, look at the way other 2D sprites are drawn then, try to make something in that style or your own style.
Because it is a form of art, sprite making is not easy, even for experienced creators so, if you find it difficult, that's normal. In general, drawing and coloring takes time and effort, be it on computer or real life. I often look at KOF and Melty Blood sprites for inspiration, i like their style and the way they are drawn.
