Usually I don’t think it matters for me, considering my own luck, there will be something stupid in game that will happen to me that doesn’t help. I’m currently learning to keep my cool and to play more calmly, which does help by not caring about what happens. To me, I think it’s best to not play when stressed, this is coming from a guy who has a short temper.
The Crew 2. going 300 mph on a motorcycle in first person across the large map of the entire united states is really calming especially with some calm music in the background
Usually a Kirby game or Bubble Bobble since I find them calming (bubble bobble is an arcade game about blowing bubbles and Kirby has nice scenery and music, couple that with Kirby's low difficulty they're perfect stress relief). I can't play a game that's gonna get too annoying or bothersome when I'm stressed so I like to play easier games. Though, usually when I'm stressed I just watch youtube or a movie. It's easier to just sit back and relax than play something with more actual interaction than a movie or video.

Team Fortress 2, which SOUNDS like a horrible idea, but it really works well.
I like to play GTA with mods, then spawn random NPC's as bodyguards with random weapons and pretend they're my friends and family, then spawn random hostile NPC's with random weapons and pretend they're my enemies, and have a battle. I have a mod that grants me infinite health so I will never die. I also have a mod that disables the wanted level so that the cops do not interfere in the battle.
It used to be Jet Set Radio Future, but since I don't have as easy access to my Xbox anymore Gran Turismo 2 has taken its place
The Touhou games, they're strangely therapeutic.

Sandbox games tend to do it for me. Gmod, People Playground, and Little Inferno, to name a few, offer a decent environment for you to just sit down and do what ever you feel like, whether it is creating a Kleiner Catapult, building a portal to the Nth Dimension, or just setting things on fire.

Terraria is my ultimate comfort game, it will always be the ultimate relaxant for me, and I hope it gets a sequel that makes me feel the same way, too
Any kirby game probably. It's hard to get upset at a game like that, unless you're doing the true arena of course
