Preferred Combo Length in Fighting Games?
How long do you prefer fighting game combos to be? There are games like old school Street Fighter that had very little ability to combo, games like MVC3 where getting tagged once guarantees being comboed to death in one shot and plenty of room in-between. Personally, I prefer combos to be of a reasonable length, as I find it boring to watch a character wail on another character, completely invincible, for 90+ hits.
Opinions on this?
Re: Preferred Combo Length in Fighting Games?
999 hit combo on mugen is limit. but if I had choose I say 30-80hits combos

Re: Preferred Combo Length in Fighting Games?
I voted 3-10 hits cause average combos shouldn't be any longer imo
10+ should be for skillful & rare combos, difficult enough to impress the crowd when you pull them out
100+ button mashing combos (touhou style) are meaningless & boring imo
Re: Preferred Combo Length in Fighting Games?
I vote medium, however, for crazy characters (say, rare akuma) 999 hit combos are pretty satisfying.
Re: Preferred Combo Length in Fighting Games?
I think length of combos should be judged by the number of seconds they take to perform as opposed to how many hits they do. Lambda, for example, in Blazblue has multiple hitting attacks and even a short 5-second bread'n'butter can rack up over 30 hits.
Re: Preferred Combo Length in Fighting Games?
10-30 hits make sense anything higher would be Op boss level
Re: Preferred Combo Length in Fighting Games?
10-30 hits for competitive play, 3-10 for casual play. 30+ should only be if there is a super move involved.
Re: Preferred Combo Length in Fighting Games?
Against weak ai characters: Long or the last one especially on Bruno's Pikachu which is the weakest MUGEN character (that's not meant to be a joke) of all time so far.
Against balanced characters: Short
Against OP characters: Medium and Long
Re: Preferred Combo Length in Fighting Games?
While I did vote for 3-10 hits, I would say a combo shouldn't be any more than 10 INPUTS, regardless of the amount of hits (for that, I'd say 3-30). Anything more than that would be too long and boring, if not too overpowered.

I completely agree. Amount of inputs matters a lot more than hits because a single input can do 999 hits.
Re: Preferred Combo Length in Fighting Games?
Short ones are the best but watching Combos from chars like Rare Akuma in Mugen is always fun
Re: Preferred Combo Length in Fighting Games?
I'd prefer 3-10 for normal characters. HOWEVER, I don't mind a joke character with a 11-30 hit combo as long as they're very, very weak.

Me too.
Re: Preferred Combo Length in Fighting Games?
well combos should be logical and with some limits cause if u combo infinitely so what the use that the other player still garbing the joystick? i have an idea why not make combos longer but reduce the damage it would make the play time longer and not boring !
Re: Preferred Combo Length in Fighting Games?
I feel that 30-80 is good as long as the combos don't last. In some games you can get 80+ combos quickly but they don't do much. As long as the combos lose attack power and gain speed as they go on any amount of attacks are fine
Re: Preferred Combo Length in Fighting Games?
It depends of character and the gameplay, I think see a agile char like Spiderman from MVC doing a combo above 30 hits not as absurd thing. But "heavy" chars like Goro Daimon from KOF or Zangief doing long combos as uncomfortable, even because their simple atacks cause big damage.
Re: Preferred Combo Length in Fighting Games?
In My Opinion It Depends On The Character's Combo Capability Because Without That There Are No Combos... But If They DO Have combo Capability You'd Want To One Combo Kill Them Because The Point Of A Fighting Game Is To Fight AND Win. :sugoi:

"_Co-Co-Co-Combo Breaker!"
Re: Preferred Combo Length in Fighting Games?
I prefer medium combos, they can deal a good chunk of damage while still giving the opponent the chance to recover or counter.
