As announced publicly a few days ago, I have operated a large software upgrade for the MUGEN ARCHIVE.

It is time to detail some of the exciting new features I have added.

The MUGEN ARCHIVE is a website where the content is provided by users on one hand. On the other hand, we don't want to be a crappy file repository where our end users have no idea what they download. That's why we have always encouraged quality descriptions. Quality is what makes us different. But it's a lot of efforts and many of our end users would rather just upload a file and call it a day.

I have wondered how to conciliate both, and so, I've come up with the metadata. From now on our scripts will attempt to generate metadata from some of the files you upload here. The metadata will make up for the lack of a good description and contains strong indicators about the file quality.

Here are two examples :

I'm sure the comparison is self explanatory and you already know which of the two characters is worth downloading.

Note that while the site stability is being tested, only users of the group New Challengers and higher will have access to the metadata, but it will eventually be expanded to users of the group Lurkers, and possibly guests in the long run.

In addition to metadata, our VIP users have access to advanced metadata which provides much more detailed informations about the archive.

And by clicking the magnifier icons, you can see a preview of any text based file.

There is no plan to expand advanced metadata access to other groups, as this feature is intended as a privilege for contributive members.

Our scripts will also attempt to generate a thumbnail of the character, which should work most of the time but can fail in some particular cases, mostly unconventionally formed sff (I have no plan to support these) and sffv2 which aren't supported yet but could be eventually. I know a script can't do as well as a human eye, so if you don't like the thumbnail generated, feel free to upload a better picture. This feature was most needed to reduce the workload of our moderators, because there were far too many posts without a proper thumbnail.

There are many other improvements I've implemented but those are the most notable. You will find out about the rest by yourself over time.

Please report any bug you may find here, I'll do my best to fix everything.

If you like these new enhancements, now may be the time to donate (http://mugenarchive.com/forums/payments.php). This is the best way to see ever more exciting new features added in the future. The best has yet to come.

Men must become more then men, and gears must become more then gears.

Peace.

No bug to report? Really?

If you want bugs to be fixed, now is the time to report, or I have a feeling we'll be stuck with them for a long while.

More bugs fixed today, especially a thumbnailer bug resulting in bad palette or empty png being generated.

Please keep reporting any issue you may find. Especially other occurrences of bad pictures being generated.

Do not report however, occurrences of thumbnailer not generating any picture at all, because it happens mostly when the sprite file is not conventional.
